RATING: ★★★★★

Sleaford Mods….where do we start with this Nottingham based due? Their unique, DIY approach to punk music is commendable. This no frills approach to not only their music, but to life in general is something that sets these guys apart from the rest. You can’t really pigeon hole this as punk, or club, or garage, or anything really...their music seems to be in a world of its own. Jason Williams, their vocalist, is like no other. His growling, sputtering rants, poetically flowing over Andrew Fearn’s unique, grungy beats like a match made in heaven. No autotune is needed with this group, nor is it wanted. I think they’re quite a marmite group, you either love them or you hate them. They may be a bit of a spikey listen at first, or they may entrance you from the get go.

The 5th track on the record “Job Seeker” is perhaps a stand out. “Desperately clutching on to a leaflet on depression, supplied to me by the NHS, it’s anyone’s guess how I got here”....need I say more? That line alone paints the image of the track perfectly in your mind. Or the 20th track on the record “Second”, is one of those minimalist approaches that the band do so well. A stripped back kit with just a just hi hat and snare, a bass line, and vocals...that’s all you need with these guys. Jason’s sometimes not so eloquent lyricism can be startling at times but is what makes it so great, and unique.

Take their stage show for example...a laptop placed on a stack of beer crates, a bottle of water, and a mic. There is nothing like it. Not just this record, but all of their music sounds like the soundtrack of a broken Britain, and a hard right turn from what the media wants you listening to.
